Bhimashankar from Pune Darshan Timings, Distance and How to Get There

Bhimashankar is the Jyotirlinga closest to Pune, a little over a hundred kilometres up into the Sahyadri. It's also had the most confusing year of any temple near the city. It was shut for five months in 2026, reopened with a four-hour window, and has changed its hours twice since. This guide puts the dates in order, gives road distances from your part of Pune on both roads, and covers buses, crowd days, the treks and the weather. Where we couldn't confirm something, we say so.

Drive time: plan on about 3 hours each way from central Pune

Normal temple hours: 5:00 AM to 9:30 PM, but they have changed several times in 2026. Call 02135 222 880 before you leave

Darshan: free. VIP and protocol darshan were scrapped in June 2026

Best months: October to February. Avoid Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri if you want a quiet darshan

Next big days: Mahashivratri on 6 March 2027; Shravan Mondays on 9, 16, 23 and 30 August 2027

Is the Temple Open? What Changed in 2026

If someone told you Bhimashankar was closed, they weren't wrong, just out of date. The district administration is rebuilding the sabhamandap and the stairway down to the temple ahead of the Nashik Kumbh in 2027, and the darshan arrangements have moved around with the work. In order:

9 January 2026

Temple closed to devotees for work on the sabhamandap and stairway, ahead of the Nashik Kumbh in 2027. Daily rituals carried on inside.

12 to 18 February 2026

Still shut, so there was no public darshan this Mahashivratri. Rituals were performed by the priests.

15 June 2026

Reopened for darshan from 7 to 11 AM only, capped at 1,000 devotees a day, with online registration and ID compulsory.

16 June 2026

VIP darshan, recommendation letters and protocol entry scrapped.

18 June 2026

Registration dropped. Free walk-in darshan, still 7 to 11 AM. A paid "Tatkal" darshan at ₹2,500 a person was announced from 22 June.

13 August 2026

Shravan hours: open 5 AM to 9:30 PM for the whole month, with construction paused.

Here's the gap: Shravan ended around 10 September and we have not found an official notice saying what the hours are now. The temple trust's own website still carries the "7 AM to 11 AM only" construction notice, and that page hasn't been updated since June. So don't plan around any single set of hours you read online, including ours.

Before you leave: call the Shri Kshetra Bhimashankar Devasthan office on 02135 222 880 or email office@shreebhimashankar.com and ask two things. What are today's darshan hours, and is the stairway open? It takes two minutes and it's a three-hour drive each way.

Bhimashankar Darshan Timings (Normal Schedule)

This is the daily schedule the temple trust publishes. It's what the temple goes back to once the construction is done, and it's roughly what ran during Shravan 2026. There's no long midday closure. The worship slots are short, and darshan continues around them.

Time What happens
5:00 AM Temple opens
5:00 to 5:30 AM Worship
5:30 AM to 12:00 PM Darshan and abhishek
12:00 to 12:20 PM Naivedyam (offering)
12:20 to 2:45 PM Darshan and abhishek
2:45 to 3:20 PM Worship
3:20 to 7:30 PM Darshan
7:30 to 8:00 PM Worship
8:00 to 9:30 PM Darshan
9:30 PM Temple closes

On Gudi Padwa, Vijayadashami, Diwali, Mahashivratri and Holi the trust adds a Maha Poshak at 3 PM, a Mahaarti at 7:30 PM and a palkhi procession.

You'll find other aarti times on travel sites, a 4:30 AM opening and a 3 PM madhyan aarti among them. The trust's table doesn't list either, so we've left them out.

Distance from Your Part of Pune

Search "Pune to Bhimashankar distance" and you'll find 100, 110, 125 and 130 km, all from sources that look official. They're all roughly right, because it depends where in Pune you start and which of the two roads you take. So we measured it. The figures below are road distances to the temple from OpenStreetMap routing, taken on 1 October 2026. "Via Wada" means through Rajgurunagar and Wada; "via Ghodegaon" means through Manchar and Ghodegaon.

Starting from Via Wada Via Ghodegaon
Bhosari 95 km 108 km
Chinchwad 97 km 110 km
Pimpri 99 km 112 km
Pimple Saudagar 102 km 115 km
Wakad 107 km 120 km
Aundh 107 km 120 km
Shivajinagar 108 km 121 km
Hinjewadi 108 km 121 km
Pune Airport (Lohegaon) 109 km 122 km
Viman Nagar 109 km 122 km
Baner 110 km 123 km
Pune Railway Station 111 km 124 km
Swargate 113 km 125 km
Kharadi 115 km 128 km
Kothrud 116 km 129 km
Wagholi 116 km 127 km
Hadapsar 119 km 132 km
Magarpatta 119 km 132 km
Katraj 119 km 131 km

The pattern is simple. Pimpri-Chinchwad and Bhosari sit closest because they're already on the Nashik highway side of the city. Hadapsar, Magarpatta, Katraj and Kothrud add 8 to 11 km of city driving before you're even on the highway, and that's usually where the time goes, more than the distance. The Manchar road is consistently about 13 km longer from everywhere.

The Two Roads, and Which One to Take

Both roads start the same way. You head north on the Pune-Nashik highway through Chakan to Rajgurunagar (Khed), about 41 km from Shivajinagar. There they split.

1. Rajgurunagar, Wada, Bhimashankar

Turn off at Rajgurunagar and go west through Wada. It's about 67 km from Rajgurunagar to the temple and the shorter of the two, roughly 108 km in total from Shivajinagar.

  • Total from Shivajinagar: about 108 km
  • Monsoon note: a landslide at Shirgaon in Khed taluka blocked the road towards Bhorgiri and Bhimashankar in July 2024

2. Manchar, Ghodegaon, Bhimashankar

Stay on the highway another 19 km to Manchar, turn west for 13 km to Ghodegaon, then climb about 48 km through the Pokhari ghat to the temple. This is the road Maharashtra Tourism names.

  • Total from Shivajinagar: about 121 km
  • Monsoon note: a landslide partly blocked the Pokhari ghat in July 2022

Outside the rains, the Wada road is the obvious choice on distance. In the monsoon, the honest answer is whichever one is open that week. Both have been blocked by landslides in recent years, and a local news report in July 2026 said both access roads were affected again (we found only one source for that).

On time: allow about three hours each way from central Pune. The last stretch on either road is ghat driving with fog for much of the monsoon, so it's slow going. Leaving the city before 6 AM usually gets you there ahead of the morning queue.

By Bus, Train or Air

MSRTC buses are the main public option. Regular buses run from Shivajinagar (Wakdewadi) and from the Rajgurunagar (Khed) and Manchar depots. During Shravan the corporation adds a lot more:

  • Shravan 2025: 80 buses, 30 regular plus 50 extra, from Shivajinagar, Khed and Manchar
  • Shravan 2026: extra buses from Manchar, Rajgurunagar and Narayangaon, plus AC e-Shivai buses that ran from 4 AM to 4 PM between 13 August and 10 September

We couldn't find a published fare or a reliable regular timetable, so check at the depot or on the MSRTC app on the day.

Train and air: Bhimashankar has no railway station. Pune Junction is where most people come in. Karjat, about 65 km away on the Konkan side, only makes sense if you're starting the trek from Khandas. Pune airport at Lohegaon is about 109 km from the temple by the Wada road.

Crowd Days to Plan Around

Mondays are busier than other weekdays all year. Two periods are in a different league altogether.

Shravan Mondays

About 2 lakh devotees came on the second Shravan Monday in 2025. In 2026 the administration ran four parking zones, kept private vehicles out of the temple area, and ran 38 shuttle buses from the parking to the bus stand at ST fare, with more than 250 police and home guards on duty.

2027: Shravan runs 3 to 31 August; Mondays fall on 9, 16, 23 and 30 August.

Mahashivratri

The biggest single day of the year. In 2026 it fell during the construction closure, so there was no public darshan at all.

2027: Saturday, 6 March.

If you have to go on one of these days, expect to park well short of the temple and take a shuttle. The administration capped private shuttles at the ST fare in 2026, so you shouldn't be paying more than that.

Best Time to Go, and the Weather

Bhimashankar sits at roughly 900 metres in one of the wettest parts of Maharashtra. The Zoological Survey of India puts annual rainfall in the sanctuary at 4,000 to 6,000 mm, several times what Pune city gets. Winter lows average around 7°C and summer highs reach about 36°C.

Months What to expect
October to FebruaryThe recommended window. Clear roads, cold early mornings, green hills after the monsoon. Carry a sweater for a 5 AM start.
March to MayDry and warm by midday. Fine for darshan, less pleasant for walking to Nagphani or Gupt Bhimashankar after 11 AM.
June to SeptemberHeavy rain, thick fog on the ghats, landslide closures and trek bans. Also Shravan. Beautiful, but only go if the roads are reported open.

At the Temple

Bhimashankar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and sits in Bhimashankar village in Khed taluka, Pune district. The Pune district administration describes the temple as 13th-century work, with the sabhamandap and shikhara added by Nana Phadnavis in the 18th century. Maharashtra Tourism calls it Nagara style with Hemadpanti influence. The Bhima river rises here, and so do the Ghod and the Goneri.

The temple sits below the bus stand, at the bottom of a long flight of steps, and that stairway is part of what's being rebuilt. If anyone in your group struggles with steps, mention it when you call the temple office; the climb back up is the harder half.

A dress code notice from the Maharashtra Temple Federation covers 71 temples in Pune district, Bhimashankar included. We couldn't find the exact rules published, so dress as you would for any major temple: shoulders and knees covered.

Around the Temple: Points, Sanctuary and Treks

The temple trust lists these nearby points. Distances are the trust's own and approximate.

Point Roughly Notes

Gupt Bhimashankar2 kmA walk through the forest from the temple
Sakshi Vinayak2 kmGanpati shrine, about the same distance as Gupt Bhimashankar
Hanuman Lake2 kmOn the way to Nagphani
Nagphani500 m past Hanuman LakeAt 1,208 m, the highest point in the sanctuary
Koteshwar6 to 7 kmFurther out; ask locally about the path

The wildlife sanctuary

The temple sits inside the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, declared on 16 September 1985 and covering 130.78 sq km across Pune, Raigad and Thane districts. It was set up mainly to protect the Indian giant squirrel, the shekru, which is Maharashtra's state animal. The forest walks around the temple are where you have the best chance of seeing one.

Indian giant squirrel, the shekru, in the Bhimashankar forest

The treks from Khandas

The classic way up is on foot from Khandas village on the Karjat side. Maharashtra Tourism describes two routes. Shidi Ghat is steep, with ladder-like steps and exposed sections. Ganesh Ghat is a more gradual climb. Neither is something to attempt without someone who knows the path.

In the monsoon the forest department closes them. In 2024 the order shut the Khandas route, Shidi Ghat and several waterfalls (Kondhwal, Chondi, Nhani, Subhedar) to visitors until 30 September, with action under the Wildlife Protection Act for anyone who ignored it. We couldn't find the 2025 or 2026 orders, so assume the same applies unless you hear otherwise from the forest office.

Staying Overnight

Most Pune visitors do it in a day. If you want to stay for an early darshan or a forest walk, MTDC runs a property at Bhimashankar, and the temple trust takes bhakta niwas bookings online through its portal at shreebhimashankar.in. Book ahead for any Shravan weekend.

Doing It by Cab from Pune

Most of the groups we drive to Bhimashankar do a same-day round trip. Leave home by 5 or 6 AM, darshan in the morning, a walk to Mumbai Point or Gupt Bhimashankar if there's time, lunch, and back in Pune by late afternoon. The driver waits at the temple while you're inside.

Our fares start at ₹2,000 one way for a sedan. A same-day round trip starts at ₹3,500 for a sedan and ₹4,800 for an SUV, with fuel, driver allowance and GST included; tolls and parking are billed extra. For a family group of seven or more, a tempo traveller keeps everyone together, and an Innova is the comfortable pick for the ghat. You can check any trip on the fare calculator before you call.

Plenty of families pair Bhimashankar with Ganpati darshan. Ozar and Lenyadri sit on the Narayangaon side of the same highway, so our Ashtavinayak guide and the Ashtavinayak circuit are worth a look if you have two days.

Planning a Bhimashankar darshan?

Tell us your date and where you're starting from. Our drivers are verified and know both ghat roads, there's only a minimal advance, and we reply within 2 minutes, 24/7. If it's a Shravan Monday, we'll tell you honestly what the parking will be like.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Bhimashankar from Pune?

From Shivajinagar it is about 108 km by road through Rajgurunagar and Wada, or about 121 km through Manchar and Ghodegaon. Both roads start on the Pune-Nashik highway as far as Rajgurunagar. From Pimpri-Chinchwad it is roughly 10 km less, and from Hadapsar or Katraj roughly 10 km more. Plan on about three hours by car from central Pune.

Is Bhimashankar temple open now?

It has been open since 15 June 2026, but the hours have changed several times this year because of construction on the sabhamandap and stairway. It ran 7 to 11 AM from June, then 5 AM to 9:30 PM through Shravan. We have not found an official notice for the hours after Shravan, so call the temple office on 02135 222 880 before you leave.

What are the Bhimashankar darshan timings?

On its normal schedule the temple opens at 5:00 AM and closes at 9:30 PM. Darshan and abhishek run from 5:30 AM, with short breaks for naivedyam at noon, worship from 2:45 to 3:20 PM and again from 7:30 to 8:00 PM. During the 2026 construction work the temple has at times allowed darshan only from 7 to 11 AM, so confirm the current hours first.

Is there VIP or paid darshan at Bhimashankar?

VIP darshan, recommendation letters and protocol entry were scrapped in June 2026. Two days later the district collector announced a paid Tatkal darshan at ₹2,500 per person, to be booked on the temple trust's website from 22 June. We could not confirm that it actually started, so check with the temple office. Regular darshan is free.

How do I reach Bhimashankar from Pune by bus?

MSRTC runs buses to Bhimashankar from Shivajinagar (Wakdewadi) and from the Rajgurunagar and Manchar depots, with extra buses from Narayangaon during Shravan. In Shravan 2025 the corporation ran 80 buses, 30 regular and 50 extra. There is no railway station at Bhimashankar; Pune is the practical railhead and airport.

Which road is better from Pune to Bhimashankar?

The road through Rajgurunagar and Wada is about 13 km shorter. The road through Manchar and Ghodegaon climbs the Pokhari ghat. Both have been hit by monsoon landslides, the Pokhari ghat in July 2022 and the Khed side near Shirgaon in July 2024, so in the rains the better road is whichever one is open that week.

When is the best time to visit Bhimashankar?

October to February. The area gets 4,000 to 6,000 mm of rain a year, so from June to September the ghats are foggy and landslides close roads. Winter mornings can drop to around 7 degrees Celsius. For a quiet darshan avoid Mondays in Shravan and Mahashivratri.

When are Mahashivratri and Shravan in 2027?

Mahashivratri falls on Saturday, 6 March 2027. Shravan in Maharashtra runs from 3 to 31 August 2027, and its Mondays are 9, 16, 23 and 30 August. These are the busiest days of the year at Bhimashankar; on one Shravan Monday in 2025 about 2 lakh devotees came.

Can I trek to Bhimashankar in the monsoon?

Usually not. The treks start from Khandas on the Karjat side, by the steep Shidi Ghat with its ladder-like steps or the gentler Ganesh Ghat. In 2024 the forest department closed the Khandas route, Shidi Ghat and several waterfalls to visitors until 30 September, with action under the Wildlife Protection Act for anyone who ignored it. Check the current year's order before planning.

Where can I stay at Bhimashankar?

MTDC runs a property at Bhimashankar, and the temple trust takes bhakta niwas bookings online through its portal. Most people from Pune do it as a day trip and do not stay over, since the temple is about three hours from the city.

How much is a cab from Pune to Bhimashankar?

Our Pune to Bhimashankar cab starts at ₹2,000 one way for a sedan. A same-day round trip with the driver waiting at the temple starts at ₹3,500 for a sedan and ₹4,800 for an SUV. Fuel, driver allowance and GST are included; tolls and parking are billed extra.
