We get calls every week from college friends planning reunions, families organising pilgrimages, and office teams looking for a weekend getaway. The question is almost always the same — "Where should we go from Pune in a tempo traveller?" After sending groups to just about every destination within 500 km of Pune, we have put together this guide based on what actually works for group trips. Not just the popular names, but the routes, costs, and the little things that make or break a group outing.
Let us get the obvious out of the way first. You could take three separate cars, or try to squeeze everyone into two SUVs. People do it all the time. But if you have been on a group trip where half the group got stuck in traffic while the other half reached the hotel an hour early, you know the problem. Everyone arrives at different times, nobody coordinates stops, and by the time you actually start having fun, half the day is gone.
A tempo traveller solves all of that. Everyone travels together — 12 to 17 people in one vehicle, with AC, pushback seats, and enough luggage space that nobody's bag is sitting on their lap. The per-person cost usually ends up being cheaper than individual cabs, and significantly cheaper than everyone booking their own ride. Plus, our drivers know these routes well — they have done hundreds of group trips to Shirdi, Goa, Mahabaleshwar, and everywhere else on this list.
Pune is perfectly positioned for group travel. Within a 4-5 hour drive, you have hill stations, beaches, pilgrimage sites, and wine country. Within 8-9 hours, you reach Goa. That is a lot of options for a weekend trip. Here are the eight destinations that our group bookings keep going to, with real costs and practical tips for each.

Shirdi is the single most booked group destination from Pune, and it is not even close. Family pilgrimages, office Ganpati trip after Ganeshotsav, senior citizen groups from housing societies — everyone goes to Shirdi. The 187 km drive via NH60 through Ahmednagar takes about 4 hours 20 minutes in a tempo traveller (slightly slower than a sedan because of the vehicle size, but not by much).
The real advantage of a tempo traveller for Shirdi is that the whole group arrives together, does darshan together, and comes back together. No coordination headaches. Our drivers drop you right near the temple entrance, then wait in the designated parking area while you do your darshan. For round trips, there is no rush — take your time with the Sai Baba Samadhi Mandir, Dwarkamai, Chavadi, and the Lendi Garden.
Insider tip: If your group leaves Pune by 3:00-4:00 AM, you reach Shirdi before the morning rush. The darshan queue is minimal before 8:00 AM. Also, consider combining Shirdi with a visit to Shani Shingnapur — it is just 65 km ahead and the detour adds about 2 hours to your total trip. Most of our group bookings for Shirdi include this stop.

Goa needs no introduction for group trips. Bachelor parties, college farewells, corporate team outings, friend reunion weekends — Goa is where Pune groups go when they want to have a proper good time. The 460 km drive takes 8-9 hours in a tempo traveller via NH48 through Satara and Kolhapur, and honestly, the journey itself becomes part of the fun when you are all travelling together.
The per-person economics work brilliantly with a tempo traveller. Split the round-trip fare among 12-15 people and you are looking at roughly ₹1,800-2,400 per person for the entire transport — that is cheaper than a one-way Volvo bus ticket to Goa. Plus, you have the vehicle available for local sightseeing in Goa. Want to go from Calangute to Old Goa to Palolem? The driver takes you. No haggling with local taxis in Goa, which are notoriously expensive.
Insider tip: Stop at Kolhapur for lunch — it is almost exactly the halfway point and the food is outstanding. Try any of the dhabas near the highway for a proper Kolhapuri tambda-pandhra rassa thali. Leave Pune early morning (5:00-6:00 AM) and you reach Goa by early afternoon. We recommend a minimum 2-3 day trip to Goa — anything less feels rushed when you factor in the travel time. For long weekends, Goa by tempo traveller is our most popular group booking.

Mahabaleshwar is where Pune goes when the heat gets unbearable — especially between March and June. At 1,350 metres above sea level, the temperature is easily 8-10 degrees cooler than Pune. For group trips, it is almost perfect: close enough for a comfortable drive, plenty to do once you get there, and enough accommodation options for any budget.
The 120 km drive takes about 3 hours in a tempo traveller. The route goes through Surur and Wai, and the last 30 km is a beautiful ghat section with hairpin bends and valley views. Tempo travellers handle the ghats well — our drivers do this route regularly and know every curve. Once you are in Mahabaleshwar, the group can visit Arthur's Seat, Wilson Point, Venna Lake, Mapro Garden (the famous strawberry farm), and the old Mahabaleshwar temple.
Insider tip: Stop at Wai for breakfast on the way — there are a few good misal pav places near the main road. If you are going between November and February, try visiting Panchgani (which is on the way) and walking along the Table Land — it is the second longest mountain plateau in Asia. The strawberry season is October to February, so time your trip accordingly if that is on the agenda.

Lonavala is the go-to when your group wants to get out of Pune but does not have the time for a longer trip. At just 65 km and about 90 minutes in a tempo traveller, it works perfectly for corporate team outings, college picnics, and family day trips. The drive via the old Mumbai-Pune highway is scenic, especially through the Khandala ghat section during monsoon when the waterfalls are active.
Groups typically visit Tiger Point, Bhushi Dam (seasonal — best in monsoon), Rajmachi Point, the Karla and Bhaja caves, and of course the chikki shops. For corporate groups, there are several resorts with team-building activity setups. A day trip works if you leave early — say 7:00 AM — and plan to be back in Pune by 8:00-9:00 PM. For overnight trips, Lonavala has budget to luxury accommodation.
Insider tip: Avoid weekends during monsoon if you can. Lonavala gets massively crowded from June to September on weekends and the main road turns into a parking lot. If your group can do a weekday trip, you will have a far better experience. Stop at the Maganlal Chikki shop on the way back — it is a Lonavala tradition.

Nashik is one of those destinations that works for completely different kinds of groups. Got a group of friends who enjoy wine? Sula Vineyards and York Winery are here. Family pilgrimage to Trimbakeshwar (one of the 12 Jyotirlingas)? Nashik is the base. History buffs? Pandavleni caves date back to the 1st century BCE. It is remarkably versatile for a city most people just associate with grapes.
The 210 km drive takes about 4 hours via the Pune-Nashik highway (NH60 up to Ahmednagar junction, then towards Nashik). The road is well-maintained throughout. For a group in a tempo traveller, a 2-day trip makes the most sense — day one for the wine tour and Gangapur Dam area, day two for Trimbakeshwar and the Panchavati area along the Godavari river.
Insider tip: Sula Vineyards opens for tours and tastings from 11:00 AM. Book your vineyard slot in advance, especially on weekends. The stomping area and amphitheatre are great for group photos. If your group is into trekking, Brahmagiri hill near Trimbakeshwar is a moderate trek with stunning views — doable for most fitness levels.

The Ashtavinayak circuit — visiting all eight sacred Ganpati temples around Pune — is one of the most meaningful group pilgrimages you can do. The temples are spread across Pune, Raigad, and Ahmednagar districts, and trying to cover them by bus or in a car with multiple stops is a logistical nightmare. This is where a tempo traveller truly shines. One vehicle, one driver who knows the route, and your group covers all eight temples in a planned circuit.
The standard circuit starts with Morgaon (Mayureshwar — the first temple in the traditional sequence), then continues through Siddhatek, Pali, Mahad, Theur, Lenyadri, Ozar, and Ranjangaon. We typically plan this as a 2-day trip: four temples each day, with an overnight halt near Mahad or wherever makes sense based on the route. The total driving distance is roughly 600 km, but it is broken into short stretches between temples, so it never feels exhausting.
Insider tip: If your group has elderly members, plan for 2.5 days instead of 2. Some temples like Lenyadri involve climbing about 300 steps — you need to budget extra time there. The best months are September-October (just after monsoon, pleasant weather) and February-March (before the summer heat kicks in).

When your group wants a beach trip but does not have the time (or budget) for Goa, Alibaug and Kashid are the answer. At about 145 km from Pune (roughly 3.5 hours by tempo traveller), you get clean beaches, water sports, and the Kolaba Fort accessible by foot during low tide. Kashid Beach, about 30 km further from Alibaug, has white sand and is less crowded on weekdays.
For corporate groups, several resorts in the Alibaug-Kashid stretch offer team outings with activities like parasailing, banana boat rides, jet skiing, and beach volleyball. A 2-day trip is ideal — travel on Saturday morning, enjoy the beach and activities all day, stay overnight, and head back Sunday evening. The route goes via Tamhini Ghat or the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, both scenic in their own way.
Insider tip: The Tamhini Ghat route is shorter but involves narrow ghat roads — fine for a tempo traveller, but significantly slower. The expressway route via Panvel is longer in distance but faster and more comfortable. For monsoon trips, Tamhini Ghat is spectacularly beautiful but drive carefully. Avoid Alibaug on long weekends — Mumbai crowds descend and everything from hotel prices to beach space gets strained.

Bhimashankar is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples and sits deep in the Sahyadri mountains, about 110 km from Pune. It is a unique group destination because it combines a sacred temple visit with a genuine trek through dense forest. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the Indian giant squirrel (the Shekru, which is Maharashtra's state animal), and the forest trail to the temple is one of the most popular treks near Pune.
The drive from Pune goes via Manchar and the road gets narrow and winding in the last 20-25 km. A tempo traveller handles it fine, but the journey takes about 3 hours due to the ghat section. For groups that want to trek, there are two main trails — one from Khandas village (easier, about 3 hours) and one from Shidi Ghat (steeper, about 2.5 hours). The tempo traveller drops you at the trail start and picks you up after.
Insider tip: Monsoon (July-September) is the most beautiful time to visit Bhimashankar — the forest is lush green, waterfalls are everywhere, and the mist adds an otherworldly feel. But the trek gets slippery, so carry proper footwear. Post-monsoon (October-November) is the sweet spot: green scenery without the slippery trails. For temple-only visits (no trek), the road goes all the way to the temple — the tempo traveller drops you at the parking lot, a short walk from the temple entrance.
