Mumbai Airport Terminal Guide: What Our Cab Passengers Need to Know

We drop passengers at Mumbai Airport almost every day. Here is everything we have learned about T1, T2, pickup zones, when to leave Pune, and how to avoid last-minute terminal confusion.

Why a Cab Service Is Writing an Airport Guide

Here is a number that surprised even us: we did roughly 120 Mumbai Airport trips last month alone. That is Pune-to-airport drops, airport-to-Pune pickups, and the occasional "my flight got cancelled, take me back home" run. After doing this for years, we have probably spent more cumulative hours at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport than most people who actually work there.

And the single biggest source of stress for our passengers is not the expressway drive. It is not the toll at Khalapur. It is this: "Am I going to the right terminal?"

We have had passengers call us from inside the airport saying they are at T1 but their airline flies from T2. We have had people show up 90 minutes before an international flight because nobody told them immigration takes time. So we decided to put everything we tell our passengers into one guide. This is not generic airport information copied from the CSIA website. This is what actually matters when you are catching a flight from Pune.

T1 vs T2: The Simple Rule Our Drivers Follow

Mumbai Airport has two terminals, and they are about 3 km apart. You cannot walk between them. If you go to the wrong one, you are looking at another 15-20 minutes in a cab or shuttle, plus the stress of wondering if you will make your flight. Here is how we sort it out before we even leave Pune:

Terminal 1 (T1) — Budget Domestic Airlines

T1 handles domestic flights only, and specifically the budget carriers. If you are flying IndiGo, SpiceJet, or Go First, your flight is at T1. That covers probably 60% of our airport drop passengers, because IndiGo alone runs a massive number of flights out of Mumbai.

T1 is the older terminal. It is functional but nothing fancy. The food options are limited — there is a Starbucks, a McDonald's, a Cafe Coffee Day, and a few smaller outlets. If you are the type who likes to eat a proper meal before a flight, eat in Pune or grab something on the expressway at the food courts near Lonavala. The lounges at T1 are basic: the Travel Club Lounge and the Loyalty Lounge. They do the job if you have a long layover, but do not expect the experience you get at T2.

Terminal 2 (T2) — Full-Service & International

T2 is the big one. If you are flying Air India, Vistara, AirAsia India (domestic), or any international flight at all — Emirates, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, anything — you need T2. This terminal was rebuilt a few years ago and it is genuinely impressive. The Jaya He art installations along the corridors are beautiful, and there are 40+ dining options and over 10 lounges including GVK Lounge and Oberoi.

One thing that trips people up: Air India domestic flights are at T2, not T1. We get asked about this all the time. Air India, despite being a domestic airline for a lot of routes, operates from T2. Same with Vistara. If you are unsure, just WhatsApp us your booking confirmation and we will confirm the terminal before we pick you up.

Drop-Off and Pickup Zones: Where Our Drivers Actually Go

The airport signage is decent, but it helps to know exactly where you are headed before you get there. Mumbai traffic near the airport is brutal, especially on the Western Express Highway approach, and you do not want to be circling around looking for the right entrance.

Dropping Off at T1

T1 departures drop-off is straightforward. We take the domestic terminal approach road and drop you right at the departure level. There is a dedicated lane for taxis and cabs on the left side. The whole thing takes about 2 minutes once we are off the main road. Just grab your bags, walk in, and you are at the check-in counters within 50 meters of the entrance. No maze of elevators or levels to figure out.

Dropping Off at T2

T2 is a bigger terminal so the approach is a bit more involved. Departures are at Level 4. We take the ramp up, and the drop-off zone is a covered area right in front of the terminal. There are separate lanes for domestic and international departures, but honestly, once you are inside the terminal the domestic and international sections are clearly marked. We usually drop right at the international departures entrance since it is the first one you reach coming up the ramp.

Picking Up at T1

When we come to pick you up from T1, the arrivals area is at ground level. Walk out of the arrivals gate, and the cab pickup zone is to your right. There is a designated area for pre-booked cabs separate from the prepaid taxi counter. Our driver will share their live location on WhatsApp once you land, so you know exactly where they are parked. Typical wait after you walk out: 3-5 minutes.

Picking Up at T2

T2 pickups are where it gets a little confusing because the terminal has multiple arrival levels. Domestic arrivals come out at Level 2. International arrivals come out at Level 1 (after customs and immigration). Either way, follow the signs for "Pre-Paid Taxi / App Cabs" once you exit. Our driver will be in the waiting area — not the parking garage, the pickup lane right outside. We always call or WhatsApp you the moment you land so you know exactly where to come.

When to Leave Pune: Our Honest Timing Guide

This is the part where most airport transfer services just say "leave early." We will give you actual times based on years of making this drive.

The Pune-Mumbai Expressway Reality

The expressway is 94 km of limited-access highway, and on a clear run we do it in about 1 hour 45 minutes. But you are not just on the expressway. You have to get from your home in Pune to the expressway entry at Kiwale (15-30 minutes depending on where you live), drive the expressway itself, then navigate from the Panvel end through Navi Mumbai roads and Western Express Highway to the airport (another 30-45 minutes, sometimes more).

Total realistic drive time: 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on time of day. We tell our passengers to budget 3 hours as the default and adjust from there.

The Pune-Mumbai Expressway toll is currently ₹385 for a sedan. The Khalapur toll plaza is where you will stop — it is on the Mumbai side, about 15 km before the expressway ends. During peak hours, the toll plaza itself can add 10-15 minutes of queuing. FASTag has helped, but holiday weekends are still slow.

Flight-by-Flight Timing Recommendations

Our Recommended Pickup Times from Pune

6-7 AM domestic flight

We pick you up at 2:00-2:30 AM. Yes, it is painfully early. But the expressway is completely empty at this hour, and we consistently reach the airport in 2 hours flat. You get to the terminal by 4:30 AM, giving you a comfortable 1.5-2 hours before boarding. Most of our early-morning passengers sleep in the car, which is fine by us.

9-10 AM domestic flight

Pickup at 5:00-5:30 AM. This is the sweet spot — early enough to beat expressway traffic (which starts building after 7 AM on weekdays) but late enough that you are not losing an entire night of sleep. We reach by 8 AM comfortably.

12-2 PM domestic flight

Pickup at 7:30-8:00 AM. Now we are in morning traffic territory. The expressway is fine, but Pune city roads and the Mumbai-end approach to the airport can be slow. We add an extra 30 minutes of buffer for this window.

5-7 PM domestic flight

Pickup at 12:00-1:00 PM. Afternoon expressway is usually clear, but the Western Express Highway near the airport is a nightmare during Mumbai rush hour (4-8 PM). We route through Andheri-Kurla Road as an alternate when traffic is bad.

International flight (any time)

Add 1 extra hour to all the above timings. Immigration, security, and the walk from T2 check-in to your gate takes longer than most people expect. For a 7 AM international flight, we pick up at 1:00-1:30 AM.

The Lonavala Fog Problem (October to February)

This catches people off guard every winter. The expressway passes through the Sahyadri ghats near Lonavala, and between October and February, dense fog can reduce visibility to almost nothing between 11 PM and 7 AM. We are not talking about light haze — there are stretches where you can barely see 20 meters ahead. Our drivers know these conditions and slow down accordingly, but it adds 20-30 minutes to the journey. We account for this when we suggest pickup times during winter months. If you have a 6 AM flight in January, we will tell you 1:30 AM pickup instead of 2:00 AM.

Wrong Terminal? Here Is What to Do

It happens. Twice last month, in fact. A passenger went to T1 but their Vistara flight was at T2. Another had a codeshare ticket and did not realize it was actually an Air India-operated flight at T2, not an IndiGo flight at T1.

If you are still in our cab when you realize the mistake, great — we just drive to the other terminal. It takes about 10-15 minutes via the airport perimeter road. No extra charge for the detour as long as we have not already left.

If you have already gone inside and realize you are at the wrong terminal, here are your options:

  • Free shuttle bus: Runs every 20 minutes between T1 and T2. Takes about 15 minutes including the wait. Follow signs for "Inter-Terminal Shuttle" near the arrivals exit.
  • Auto-rickshaw or cab from outside: Costs ₹200-300 and takes 10-15 minutes. Faster than the shuttle but you need to exit the terminal first.
  • Total time to budget: 30-45 minutes from the moment you realize you are at the wrong terminal to reaching the correct check-in counter. If your flight is in less than 90 minutes, this gets very tight.

This is why we always confirm the terminal before we leave Pune. We check your airline, your PNR, and sometimes even the airport website to make sure. It takes 30 seconds and saves enormous headaches.

Why Getting Dropped Off Beats Driving Yourself

Some of our Pune passengers ask whether they should just drive themselves to the airport and park. It is a fair question, so here are the actual numbers:

  • Airport parking at T2: ₹100/hour for the first 2 hours, ₹60/hour after that. A 3-day trip will cost you ₹3,000+ just for parking.
  • Airport parking at T1: Similar rates but the lot is smaller and fills up faster, especially during holiday season.
  • The expressway drive: It is 150 km each way. After a long flight, the last thing most people want is a 3-hour drive back to Pune. We have heard this from passengers who tried it once and then called us the next time.
  • Your car sitting in Mumbai: Airport parking is generally safe, but you are still leaving your vehicle in an open lot for days. Minor dents from other cars are not uncommon.

Our Pune to Mumbai Airport cab costs ₹2,500-3,500 one way depending on the car type. A round trip with waiting (drop off, pick up when you return) is ₹5,000-6,500. Compare that to fuel (₹1,200-1,500 round trip), tolls (₹770 round trip), parking (₹1,500+ for even one night), wear on your car, and the exhaustion of driving yourself — the cab just makes sense for most people.

Need an Airport Drop or Pickup?

WhatsApp us your flight details — airline, date, time — and we will confirm the terminal, suggest a pickup time, and give you a fixed fare. No surprises at the end.

The Return Journey: Airport to Pune Pickup

Picking you up from Mumbai Airport is actually the trickier part of our job, not the drop-off. Here is how we handle it:

Flight tracking: When you book a return pickup, we ask for your flight number. We track it. If your flight is delayed by an hour, we do not just send the driver at the original time and charge you waiting fees. We adjust. The driver leaves Pune later and arrives when you actually land. We give you 60 minutes of free waiting time from the moment the flight touches down, because we know immigration, baggage claim, and walking to the pickup zone takes time.

The airport exit confusion: Mumbai Airport's arrivals area is hectic, especially at T2 during peak international arrival hours (late night and early morning). There are touts pushing prepaid taxi counters, Ola/Uber pickup zones, hotel shuttle vans, and general chaos. When you walk out, look for signage that says "Pre-Booked Cabs" or "App Cabs." Our driver will have sent you a WhatsApp pin of their exact location before you even land. Walk toward that pin. If you cannot find them, call — they are within a 2-minute walk of the arrivals gate.

Late-night arrivals: A lot of international flights land between 10 PM and 3 AM. The expressway is empty at that hour, which means the drive back to Pune is fast — under 2.5 hours usually. But our drivers also know that passengers arriving at midnight after a 12-hour flight are exhausted. We keep the car clean, the AC set to a comfortable temperature, and let you sleep the whole way home. That is the benefit of having a dedicated driver rather than driving yourself after a red-eye.

Night Flights and Early Morning Departures

About 40% of our Mumbai Airport trips are for flights before 8 AM or after 10 PM. Here is what those look like:

3 AM or 4 AM departures (yes, those exist): These are usually connecting international flights. We pick you up from Pune around midnight or 12:30 AM. The entire expressway is yours at that hour. Fog is the only concern (see above). We reach the airport by 2:30 AM, giving you time for check-in and security.

Late-night departures (10 PM, 11 PM): Pickup from Pune at 5:30-6:00 PM. This one is tricky because you hit Mumbai evening traffic on the airport approach. We leave a bigger buffer for these — sometimes the Western Express Highway from Vashi to Andheri alone takes 45 minutes between 6 and 8 PM.

We run these trips every single day, 365 days a year. Diwali, New Year's Eve, monsoon season — it does not matter. If you have a flight, we will get you there.

International Travel: Extra Things to Know

If you are flying internationally from Mumbai, a few things are different from domestic travel:

Immigration time: Budget at least 30-45 minutes for immigration at T2, more during peak hours (late evening when most Middle East and European flights depart). The queues are long, and if you are traveling during summer holidays or Diwali season, add another 15 minutes.

Foreign exchange: We always tell our passengers to get forex done in Pune before the trip. The rates at Mumbai Airport are worse. Thomas Cook and BookMyForex have outlets across Pune, and they give better rates than the airport counters. If you forgot, T2 has exchange counters after security, but expect a 2-3% markup.

Excess luggage: International passengers tend to carry more bags. Let us know when you book so we can send an SUV or a sedan with a bigger boot. An Innova or Ertiga handles 3-4 large suitcases easily. A Swift Dzire can take 2 large bags and a carry-on, but it gets tight with 3 big ones.

Duty-free on arrival: If you are getting picked up after an international flight, factor in time for duty-free shopping if you want it. The duty-free stores at T2 international arrivals are before you exit to the pickup area. Once you walk past them, you cannot go back in. Our drivers are patient — the 60-minute free waiting time usually covers any duty-free browsing.

What CabsPune Charges for Airport Transfers

We keep pricing straightforward. No surge, no dynamic pricing, no "oh but there is a toll convenience fee" nonsense. Here is what you pay:

Trip Sedan (Dzire/Etios) SUV (Innova/Ertiga)
Pune to Mumbai Airport (one-way) ₹2,500 - ₹3,000 ₹3,500 - ₹4,000
Mumbai Airport to Pune (one-way) ₹2,500 - ₹3,000 ₹3,500 - ₹4,000
Round trip (drop + pickup, same day) ₹5,000 - ₹5,500 ₹6,500 - ₹7,500

Tolls (₹385 each way) and parking fees are included in all the above. No advance payment — pay when you reach. We will give you the exact fare when you tell us your pickup location and car preference. The range above depends on whether you are in central Pune (cheaper) or outskirts like Hinjewadi or Wagholi (slightly more because of the extra distance to the expressway).

Questions We Get Asked on Every Airport Trip

After thousands of airport runs, we hear the same questions repeatedly. Here are honest answers:

"Can I get a cab at the airport for the return to Pune instead of pre-booking?"
You can, but it will cost more and take longer. Prepaid taxis at Mumbai Airport charge ₹3,500-4,000 for Pune, and the queue during peak hours can be 20-30 minutes. Ola and Uber are options but their pricing fluctuates wildly — we have seen Uber quotes of ₹4,500+ during late-night surge. With us, you get a fixed price, no waiting, and a driver who is already there when you walk out.

"What if my flight gets cancelled?"
It happens. If you are getting dropped off and the flight gets cancelled after we have already left Pune, you still pay for the trip — the driver has already driven 150 km. But if you cancel before we depart, no charge. For pickups, if your incoming flight is cancelled, obviously there is no charge.

"Can I make a stop on the way?"
Within reason, yes. A lot of passengers ask us to stop at the food courts near Lonavala on the expressway, or at McDonald's at Khalapur. Quick stops are no problem. If you want to stop in Lonavala town for 30 minutes, just let us know in advance so we can factor it into the timing.

"Is there Wi-Fi at the airport?"
Both terminals have free Wi-Fi for 45 minutes. After that, you need to register with your mobile number for extended access. T2's Wi-Fi is faster and more reliable. But honestly, just use your mobile data — it is less hassle than the airport Wi-Fi registration process.
